Sturgeon Falls landfill opens for annual Spring Cleanup

The Sturgeon Falls landfill has been opened to residents of Sturgeon Falls, Cache Bay, and Springer for the annual Spring Cleanup.

“It will be open for three weeks, and three Saturdays as well,” Mayor Joanne Savage said. “It will be free.”

Municipal officials say there will be a controlled limit on the amount of vehicles allowed inside the landfill at the time to promote physical distancing. Increased waiting times are expected.

“I want to remind people to be patient,” Savage said. “There are measures that have been adopted to make sure our employees remain safe.”

Officials say you are allowed a maximum of two cubic metres of household waste, which is approximately a full pickup truck, per resident. Waste and recyclables should be sorted prior to your arrival at the landfill, and all items much be placed in designated areas, otherwise, a tipping fee will be applied.

Officials add that curbside pickup is no longer available as part of the Spring Cleanup, and household hazardous waste should be brought to the Hazardous Material Site in North Bay.

The landfill is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and every Saturday starting May 23, until June 6 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The landfill will be closed this Monday as part of the May long weekend.
