Cyclist charged after colliding with stopped car

Nipissing West OPP has charged a cyclist after a collision with a car.

Police say the incident took place on King Street in West Nipissing. The bicycle was travelling east on the left-hand side of the road and hit a stopped vehicle in the opposite lane.. There were no injuries reported.

The 30-year old from Markstay-Warren was charged with person not driving a bicycle near to the right-hand side of the roadway.

Police say cyclists must share the road with vehicles, and under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act, a bicycle is considered a vehicle. That means cyclists:

  • must obey all traffic laws
  • have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers
  • cannot carry passengers – if your bicycle is only meant for one person
  • stay as close to the right edge of the road as safely as possible when being passed
