Fire ban leads to suspicious person arrested

Nipissing West OPP says a backyard fire during a province-wide fire ban opened up a bigger can of worms for a 31-year-old.

Police say on Friday evening they responded to a report of a suspicious person around a property on Cache Bay Road in West Nipissing. Officers say when they arrived, the person had started a fire in the backyard fire pit.

Officials say when they told the person there was a fire ban, the accused started yelling profanities at the officers, who was then arrested for causing a disturbance.

As a result, the 31-year-old with no fixed address was charged with:

  • Causing a Disturbance
  • Resist Peace Officer
  • Engage in Prohibited Activity on Premises

The accused was released and will appear before court in North Bay on June 30.
