OPP on the lookout for COVID-19 frauds

Police say fraudsters will continue to find ways to dupe people out of their money or personal information, and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic makes no difference.

A few potential scams have already popped up related to the virus. The OPP says fraudsters will attempt to profit from consumers’ fears, uncertainties, and misinformation.

Police say the following are examples of what you should look for in a potential scam:

  • Private companies offering ‘fast’ COVID-19 tests for sale
  • Fraudulent and deceptive online ads offering cleaning products, hand sanitizers and other items in high demand
  • Malicious email campaigns that capitalize on the public’s fears about COVID-19
  • Door-to-door offering fake decontamination services
  • Fraudsters may urge you to invest in hot new stocks related to the disease

Officials say in order to protect yourself, visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s website, stay informed on the latest health information, and beware of unauthorized charities requesting money for research.

If you think you or someone you know has been a victim of fraud, contact the Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
