Strong Kids sending kids to camp

The Strong Kids campaign is underway after the annual Strong Kids breakfast fundraiser.

Nicole Beattie, the vice-president of philanthropy, marketing and communications at the YMCA says this is an event they look forward to all year.

“We invite the community to come in and we raise a lot of money to send kids to programs and camp,” she said.

Beattie says the programs offered at the YMCA include swimming lessons, gymnastics, and cooking programs. At camp, Beattie says the experience offers a bunch of different life lessons.

“At camp, they are going to learn outdoor education, life skills, problem solving and friendship building,” she explained. “They are going to go out on Lake Nipissing and learn to canoe and having swimming lessons out there. There are lots for them to learn at camp over the summer.”

According to Beattie, the Strong Kids campaign helps give children these experiences they might not normally get because of financial problems.

“In North Bay, we see one in three of all people we serve are financially assisted and the need is growing,” she said. “We speak with families every day who need some help getting their kids into programs. We financially assist $400,000. No one is ever turned away due to financial circumstance and we figure out how we can help those families.”
