Numbers coming into focus as budget meetings continue

Numbers are starting to come more into focus with every budget meeting West Nipissing council has.

At the end of January, the levy increase stood at 11.6 per cent. Since then, in the month and a half of debates, council has been able to knock that number down to 6.2 per cent.

According to Mayor Joanne Savage, staffing adjustments with the municipality have contributed to the decrease of the levy.

“Initially with the 11.6 per cent that was identified, there were a few new positions that would be created,” she explained. “From the synopsis that was provided to council, there are some positions that have been eliminated. The reduction is in hiring of full time employees.”

“We’re not going to be hiring a community service maintenance person, economic development officers, or a financial analyst,” Savage continued. “We’re going to be lowering some reserve requests between fire and community services.”

The number of 6.2 per cent isn’t a concrete number, however, as other numbers continue to trickle in.

“We’re getting final numbers from some boards,” Savage said. “We’re going to have some savings pertaining to the health unit.”

“Council has had the opportunity to debate on these issues and see where we stood on what we felt comfortable in supporting or not supporting,” she continued. “There wasn’t anything removed from the synopsis given from the CAO.”
