Council set for another budget meeting tomorrow

Budget meetings continue to take place for West Nipissing council, but the final stretch appears to be in sight with a meeting set for tomorrow night.

Last week, Mayor Joanne Savage said all the presentations from all the departments have been given, and now council will look at the numbers and determine what the best course of action is. Originally, council was to discuss the matter last week but ran out of time which prompted the meeting this week.

In early February, the CAO Jay Barbeau said taxpayers were looking at an 11.6 per cent increase, but since then, they have been able to whittle the number down to 6.2 per cent before the meeting Tuesday.

A West Nipissing household paid, in 2019, an average of $2,163.86 in property taxes, which is the lowest among several comparable municipalities across the province. The closest example given was Elliot Lake at $2,513.56, while North Bay homeowners paid an average of $3,376.48.
