Nipissing University kicks off Research Month

Nipissing University kicked off its second annual “Research Month” in front of a crowd gathered inside North Bay City Hall.

Throughout the month of March, the university will be hosting a series of events across North Bay, to highlight the research that is being conducted up on College Drive.

“What’s really important about Research Month is to bring the research to the community,” said Dr. Mike DeGagne, the president of Nipissing said. “This helps our community understand what we do at the university with respect to our research.”

According to DeGagne, hosting the launch at City Hall helps get the word out to the public of the free research events this month.

“We’re letting people know that this is a Nipissing-wide public event,” DeGagne explained. “We want people to attend some of the activities we have where researchers will be presenting their work in a bite-size way, along with publicizing undergraduate research we have ongoing.”

The first event takes place on Tuesday at the Grande Event Centre and is called NU360. There, Dr. DeGagne and seven other researchers will present six-minute slides on their research and be judged by highschool students. That starts at 6:00 p.m.

The next event takes place March 20-21. The university says that event will be the 13th Annual Undergraduate Research Conference, which will be held on campus, providing an opportunity for undergraduate students at Nipissing and across Ontario to engage in scholarly debate and showcase their work before their peers, faculty, and the public.

Research month will wrap up on March 24 with a Three Minute Thesis competition. Starting at 6:00 p.m. in the Nipissing Theatre, it is a university-wide competition for Masters and Doctoral students in which participants present their research and its wider impact in three minutes or less to a panel of non-specialist judges from the North Bay community. The winner from this event will move on to the next stage of this national competition.
