Council looking at changes to Highway 17/Ottawa Street intersection

Some changes may be coming to the Highway 17 and Ottawa Street intersection.

The intersection has been the subject of complaints and concerns of safety recently, which prompted Mayor Joanne Savage to bring the issue before council.

“At different times during the day, there are peak periods based on the volume and type of traffic,” she explained. “People identified they didn’t felt safe or they thought it was a risk issue to try and exit from Ottawa Street to Highway 17. I concurred and brought it to council so our public works manager had the opportunity to verify what the options are.”

After Tuesday’s meeting, Savage says they have a few different ideas on the table.

“They can look at speed reduction, or monitoring speed to look at an accumulation of data,” the Mayor said. “They’re also looking at light indicators to identify that you are approaching an intersection, or talking to the commercial business on the corner to try and alleviate the burden of trying to see oncoming vehicles.”
