OPP release victims names after deadly New Year’s day collision

The Nipissing West OPP have released the names of the victims of the New Year’s Day fatal collision on Highway 17 near Sudbury.

The crash, which happened around 8:50am, claimed the lives of Destiny Osagie, age 11, Flourish Osagie, age 10 at the scene. A third, Britney Osagie, age 6, was transported to the hospital before she succumbed to her injuries.

A 45-year-old female was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while a 10-year-old male was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries. A 45-year-old female driver was left uninjured. All the occupants of the car were from Chelmsford.

Police say after a preliminary investigation, the car which was travelling westbound near the Highway 144 turnoff on Highway 17 left the roadway and struck a rock-cut. The investigation is continuing with the assistance of an OPP Collision Reconstructionist and an OPP Technical Collision Investigator (TCI).

The westbound lanes of Highway 17 were closed for seven hours while officers conducted their investigation.
