Employers were looking for plenty of workers in Nipissing District during October

There was a surge in job vacancies during October in Nipissing District.

The Labour Market Group says 458 job postings went up and says this is a “very large” increase in postings from the previous month when 355 help wanted signs went up.

The rise represents a 29 percent increase and LMG says the jobs cover various areas.

Not only was this past October’s job numbers higher over last year, but LMG also says it’s “notably higher” than the current five-year October average.

Over the last five years, the number of job vacancies averaged 418 making the most recent October numbers 9.5 percent higher than the average.

During October, 212 different employers were looking for workers.

LMG says that’s an increase of 11 percent over September.

It’s also 15.5 percent higher than the five-year October average of different employers looking to fill vacancies.

The five-year average for unique employers posting job vacancies is 184.

Canor Construction topped the list of employers looking for people interested in finding work with 28 postings.

Right behind was Plan A Healthcare Staffing Solutions which needed 26 people.

Zedd Customer Solutions occupied third place in the job postings category with 20 vacancies.

That was followed by Leisure Farms in Sturgeon Falls which needed 16 people.

Rounding out the top five employers looking for workers was Blanchfield Roofing which had job slots for nine people.

In terms of salaries, the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit posted the highest job salary at $85,748 for a Program Manager.

Second was Nipissing University which was looking to fill a Manager of Counselling Services at a rate of $63,331 and right behind at $63,215 was the position of Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist at the March of Dimes Canada.

LMG Executive Director Stacie Fiddler says the retail sector saw the largest number of job postings at nearly 16 percent.

Fiddler says this sector usually starts to ramp up its workforce beginning around October to get ready for the upcoming holiday shopping season.

Leading this sector with 21 postings were retail employers looking for sales associates and representatives.

Another set of employers was looking to fill 12 retail manager and assistant manager positions while other employers had vacancies for six pharmacists.

The highest hourly wage job posting was for a registered nursing position at $50 at Plan A Healthcare Staffing Solutions.

In second was ion8 which was willing to pay $37.00 an hour for a Business Management Consultant followed by One Kids Place which needed a Physiotherapist and was willing to pay $34.43 hourly.

The West Nipissing General Hospital had the fourth-highest hourly wage job posting at $33.87 for a Mental Health Counsellor.

Plan A Healthcare Staffing Solutions was back in the top hourly wage category offering the fifth-highest hourly wage at $33.00 for a Registered Practical Nurse.

In response to why the October numbers were well above the five-year job-posting average, Fiddler says it may be because more employers could be posting vacancies online nowadays as opposed to not using this platform as much in the past.

Fiddler says she doesn’t believe there is anyone “singular event that accounts for this trend”.
