Five impaired charges bumps yearly total to 55 in West Nipissing

West Nipissing OPP had a busy month of November as they arrested and charged people for impaired driving.

These arrests mark 55 drivers charged under criminal impaired driving laws for the Nipissing West detachment of the OPP. In 2018, West Nipissing OPP arrested 32 drivers.

The first arrest happened on November 15 when officers in Sturgeon Falls received complaints of a man sleeping in an idling vehicle. Police investigated and found out the man had been drinking alcohol.

As a result, a 58-year-old man from North Bay was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 Plus)

He is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Sturgeon Falls on December 5.

The second happened two days later on November 17 when officers saw a vehicle ahead of them weaving all over the road in Markstay-Warren.

Once police were able to stop the vehicle near Coniston, they found out the man had been drinking alcohol. The 43-year-old man from St. Charles was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 Plus)
  • Careless Driving

The man will appear in court in Sudbury on January 8.

That same day, in the early morning, OPP received a report of someone suspected to be intoxicated leaving a home in Verner and heading towards Highway 17. Shortly after, officers found out the man had returned to the home and damaged a door.

Officers arrived at the home and arrested a 50-year-old man from Verner, and charged him with:

  • Mischief
  • Operation While Impaired – Alcohol
  • Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 Plus)

The accused will appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Sturgeon Falls on January 2.

Days later, on November 23, officers responded to a call of an unwanted person at a home in Field. While on the way, police saw what they believe to be the person’s vehicle leaving the home. After a traffic stop, officers discovered the man had been drinking alcohol. As a result, a 34-year-old man from Field was arrested and charged with:

  • Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 Plus)

The man will appear in court in Sturgeon Falls on January 2.

The last arrest came on November 29 when the West Nipissing OPP were called to help a vehicle that was stuck on the side of Highway 17. Once officers arrived, they realized the driving had been consuming alcohol, and as a result, they arrested and charged a 71-year-old woman of Field with:

  • Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 Plus)

All of the accused were issued 90-day automatic driver’s licence suspensions and had their vehicles impounded for seven days.
