OPP announce numbers for year to date motor collisions

OPP are reporting that 239 people have lost their lives due to collisions on patrolled roadways so far this year.

That number comes from a total of 216 fatal vehicle collisions.

Motor vehicle collisions this year are up as well. 53,036 compared to 52,676 last year.

For 2019, preventable deaths account for a significant number of fatalities. Speed is the lead factor to date with 46 deaths attributed to this aggressive driving behaviour. Lack of seat belt use among drivers and passengers accounts for 44 fatalities. Driver inattention has been linked to 42 deaths and 33 people died in crashes that involved alcohol and/or drugs.

Drivers account for 162 of those who died, 53 of the deceased were passengers while pedestrians make up 24 of the deaths.
