OPP hand out arrests in relation to fleeing vehicle

OPP attempted to stop a speeding vehicle in Markstay-Warren on Sunday, but once the vehicle noticed the officers turning around it drifted into the oncoming lane in an attempt to evade the police.

According to police, the speeding vehicle tried to turn onto Sunset Road but instead crashed into the ditch and struck a hydro pole. The driver took off on foot while leaving three passengers in the car, all of whom were uninjured.

While conducting the search, police discovered that the driver had reached a nearby residence and where he was able to call a taxi and leave.

The OPP Canine Unit and OPP Emergency Response Team were brought in to assist. While searching for the driver, police found drugs suspected to be Purple Heroin and Cocaine. The street value has been estimated at $26,600.

As a result, a 22-year-old from Mattawa, who was a passenger has been charged with:

  • Obstruct Peace Officer
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Heroin

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Sudbury Court of Justice on December 18.

The identity of the driver was known and an arrest warrant was issued and led to an arrest in a parking lot on Fisher Street in North Bay. Two other occupants were also arrested.

In addition to the arrest, more drugs, this time suspected to be Purple Heroin and Methamphetamine, a large amount of Canadian Currency, two prohibited knives and a collapsible baton were seized. The street value of the drugs seized is approximately $3,100.

A 30-year-old Bonfield man has been charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Cocaine
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Heroin
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance – Methamphetamine
  • Operation While Prohibited
  • Dangerous Operation
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000
  • Driving While Under Suspension
  • Fail to Remain

The accused remain in custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on October 5.

One of the other occupants is a 31-year-old man from Patterson Township and has been charged with “Unauthorized Possession of a Weapon” and has been released with a promise to appear at the Courthouse in North Bay on October 29.

The third occupant was released unconditionally.
