Orange Shirt Day observed at local schools

Canadore College will host an Orange Shirt Day initiative on September 30.

Orange Shirt Day is an annual event to commemorate truth and reconciliation as well as bring to light the stories of residential school survivors.

It is an opportunity for First Nations, local government, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come. Orange shirts will be given out at the three main Canadore campuses in North Bay.

Because the 30th falls on a PA Day for Nbsiing Secondary School, the events at the school will take place today.

The origin of Orange Shirt Day comes from when Phyllis (Jack) Webstad attended her first day of residential school wearing a brand new orange shirt from her grandmother and it was taken away from her.

The date was chosen because it was the time of year when children were taken from their homes to residential schools and because it sets the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying for the coming school year.
