Lifetime Terry Fox fundraising goal reached at 13

Alex Hebert has reached his lifetime goal for fundraising with the Terry Fox Run.

When we last caught up with Alex, he was hoping to bring in at least $1,800 this year to hit the goal of $14,000. At just the age of 13, he has reached that goal with the run set to go today at White Woods Public School. The annual run was pushed back this year due to the IPM in Verner.

In mid-September, he had $800 raised. In just a couple of weeks, Alex raised the additional $1,000 he had hoped for.

Alex’s first Terry Fox run was at the tender age of seven months old, with his mother Marci Becking pushing his stroller through the route.

“When I took him up to the desk in his stroller at seven months old, we went up to the volunteers at the desk to hand them the form,” Marci explained at the time. “They thought it was for me and I said ‘no, it’s for this guy, he raised it.’ I really wanted to instill in my child that community participation was important and growing up knowing about Terry Fox and his courage and what he went through.”

This year marks his 14th time participating in the run, but it will be his last school-related run as Alex says he plans on participating in the North Bay run next year.

He also plans to honour his Uncle, Mike St-Amour who is battling cancer, at this year’s run.
