Students mark 9th annual Franco-Ontarian Day

Today is Franco-Ontario Day and that is cause for celebration province-wide.

This year marks the 9th annual event since the province held its first Franco-Ontario day back in 2010.

Students in the West Nipissing area will be getting involved as well, as students from grades 7 to 12 will be travelling to CANO to take in Cherry Chérie, while all other students will be celebrating in their respective schools.

The area is rich in francophone history as Samuel de Champlain made his way through the area starting 405 years ago.

Ontario is home to over 600,000 Franco-Ontarians which is the largest francophone community in Canada outside of Quebec.

The very first Franco-Ontario flag flew in Sudbury at the University of Sudbury on September 25, 1975.
