OPP: Child found asleep in car with driver later charged with impaired

(CALLANDER, ON) A 42-year-old from Cambridge, Ontario has been charged with impaired offences after an interaction with officers from the North Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police.

On Saturday, at approximately 8:30 am, officers report observing a vehicle parked on the side of Highway 11 in Callander. As they approached the vehicle, they observed a person slumped over the steering wheel. Officers opened the door and say they detected a strong odour of alcohol. The person behind the wheel was arrested for care and control of motor vehicle and was brought to the North Bay OPP detachment for further testing and blew more than 3 times the legal limit.

A nine-year-old child was found by police sleeping in the vehicle.

As a result of police investigation the accused was charged with the following:

  • Operation While Impaired – Alcohol – Criminal Code (CC)
  • Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 Plus) – CC
  • Having Care or Control of a Motor Vehicle with Open Container of Liquor – Liquor License Act

The accused was released on a Promise to Appear and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on August 27.

The accused was issued a 90-day Automatic Drivers Licence Suspension (ADLS), and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

This was the 35th impaired driver charged by the North Bay OPP in 2019.
