OPP in Kirkland Lake are looking into a romance scam that’s defrauded three people in their area of $68,000. In each instance the con artist makes contact with the victim through a social networking site. As the relationship grows the fraudster, who claims to be in a foreign country, says he wants to meet the victim but can’t afford the travel expense. At this point the victim starts sending money. Kirkland Lake OPP says the romance scam has become the highest grossing scam in Canada with millions of dollars sent to fraudsters.
