Nickel Belt MP Marc Serre says the federal government is helping the next generation of workers to prepare for a technology-driven economy.
Serre, along with his Sudbury MP colleague Paul Lefebvre, have unveiled the first phase of CanCode so that more than 3,100 students in both ridings can get digital skills training.
The students acquire digital skills through workshops offered by places like Science North, Cambrian College and local school boards.
Serre says CanCode gives students from kindergarten to Grade 12 the chance to learn digital skills like coding, including learning about artificial intelligence.
CanCode also gives teachers the know-how when it comes to incorporating new digital skills and technologies in the classroom.
Serre says he’s looking forward to how school boards like the Near North board and Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic board provide young people with the tools they need to prepare them for tomorrow’s job market.
Serre says in 2018 Science North was given $2 million to develop and implement programs with a digital angle so young people could develop digital literacy and problem-solving skills.
The Nickel Belt MP says now the federal government is committing $60-million nationwide for the next two years to reach two million students and teachers and empower them with the tools they need for tomorrow’s world.
