Garbage limit coming to West Nipissing

The Municipality of West Nipissing plans to introduce a four garbage bag limit.

The current limit is six bags.

Councillor Jeremy Seguin commended staff in the drive to reduce solid waste.

However, Seguin requested that an exemption to the limit be allowed around Christmas time because, during that time of year, people tend to generate more garbage.

However, Councillor Lise Senecal says the exemption may not be necessary if people recycle more.

Senecal says she lived in Sudbury for 10 years which has a two bag limit and down the street from her lived a large family that did a lot of recycling and she never saw more than two garbage bags placed at the curb.

The resolution passed without any exceptions but Mayor Joanne Savage said the issue of creating an exemption around Christmas can always be raised as that time of year draws near.

The amended bylaw also has a weight restriction on the bags.

Councillor Dan Roveda wanted to know if any of the workers had lost time because of being hurt while picking up garbage.

To the best of staff’s recollection, that has never happened.
