One day breast-screening mammogram events surpasses targets

The North Bay Regional Health Centre had another successful breast cancer screening challenge.

The hospital tested 104 women.

It was hoping to get at least 100 women tested over a 12-hour period.

Having a mammogram has proven to detect breast cancer long before any physical signs or symptoms show up.

That early detection means the disease is treatable.

This is the 12th year that the hospital has carried out its marathon one-day event.

The NBRHC was the first hospital in the Northeast to introduce the concept after hearing that a hospital in London, Ontario was carrying out the tests.

It caught on locally and in the ensuing years, more hospitals in the Northeastern Ontario have also conducted the one-day screenings.

North Bay wasn’t the only site to surpass its goal.

The 10 locations across the Northeast had hoped to screen 360 women who had not had a mammogram or were overdue.

When the testing was over, 427 women were tested during the one-day breast screening marathon.

It’s recommended that women who are 50 to 74 years of age should have a mammogram every two years.
