Tick with bacteria that causes Lyme disease found in region

A blacklegged tick with the bacteria that can cause Lyme disease has been found in the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit zone.

The health unit says the tick was found near Burk’s Falls in Dunchurch.

The tick is the first one the health unit has found this year with the disease-causing bacteria compared to seven during 2018.

If left untreated, Lyme disease can result in severe headaches, joint pains and in some cases heart palpitations.

The health unit says although the risk of being infected with the bacteria is low in the catchment area, it’s still important to protect oneself against tick exposure.

That’s why the health unit recommends bug sprays to protect against insect bites, wearing long-sleeved and long pants when outside and try to avoid walking in tall grass.

In addition, wear light-coloured clothing so it’s easier to spot a tick, and if you’ve been outside, take a shower when you’re back indoors.

If a tick is attached to your skin the health unit recommends removing it with a tweezer and get it to the health unit.

Also, see your family doctor.
