Canadore to introduce two programs to address skills shortage

Canadore College is expecting to have two new programs in place this fall.

College president George Burton says thanks to a grant of $514,624 from the province the school can expand the pre-apprenticeship program in carpentry and cook.

Burton points out that the cook program was offered some time back, and is now back.

“This is part of the government’s plan to grow apprenticeships across the province because we’re well aware that we have a skills shortage in the province,” Burton said in response to the funding allocation.

Burton says the new programs allow students to get the fundamental skills of both occupations and it’s hoped this “sparks their interest and gives then good grounding to continue in the apprenticeship stream”.

“This is training people for meaningful careers that have great employment at the end,” Burton said.

Burton says if the number of students exceeds the number the programs can handle then Canadore would make adjustments.

“We’d do our best to bring other resources to the table to expand those intakes,” he said.

Burton also points out the cook program is separate from Canadore’s School of Culinary.
