Area federal MP weighs in on Ford government health cuts

Nickel Belt Liberal MP Mark Serre is critical of cuts by the Ford government.

In particular, the federal politician is worried about how the Ontario Premier’s cuts will affect long-term care.

Serre says he had hoped that cuts were at an end, but he says budget cuts are putting critical services, like long-term care, at risk.

Serre says it’s unthinkable that the Ford government is moving ahead with funding cuts in this area considering seniors make up the bulk of the population in nursing homes and are a vulnerable group of people.

The MP says the cuts will add immense pressure to facilities in Nickel Belt and other communities.

Serre says before the cuts, these facilities indicated they needed more funding.

Serre says reducing budgets for long-term care facilities creates a ripple effect that negatively impacts other services like hospitals and clinics.

Making matters worse, Serre says these facilities are currently overburdened because of shortfalls.

And Serre says just because funding is reduced, won’t make the need for services disappear.

He says instead the need will only grow as Canada’s population continues to age.

Less money means less opportunity to hire more staff at long-term care homes and Serre says with fewer employees to do the work, it means a further strain on the current workers.

Serre says this not only affects the quality of care for residents by putting that level of care at risk, but it may also affect the personal health of the employees.

Serre is speaking up about the Ford government’s cuts to long-term care and calls what is happening an injustice.

He hopes families with members in nursing homes and concerned people also speak up and voice their objections to the provincial government’s cuts.

Serre says people can’t afford to be silent on the issue and let it go unnoticed.
