Flood watch in place for Lake Nipissing and Upper French River

With summer only days away, the threat of flooding is still alive and well in Nipissing District.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has issued a flood watch for Lake Nipissing and the Upper French River.

The watch for the North Bay District is in effect until June 21st, the first day of summer.

The MNRF says both waterways are only expecting minimal rain over the next five days.

And although the water level for both water bodies continues to fall, the ministry says there’s the potential for flooding if significant rainfall events take place.

The MNRF says the water level is expected to keep dropping by about 2 cm a day and Lake Nipissing and the Upper French River could reach non-damage levels by Friday.

Meanwhile, the ministry is again asking boaters who use both waterways to stay away from shorelines and flood-affected areas so the wakes from their boats don’t damage the environment, shoreline properties or even hurt someone on land.

The ministry also suggests that recreational water users like people on jet skis, canoes, kayaks and boats use caution near dams and flood-prone areas because things like logs, docks and decks have been reported in flood-affected areas and they could pose a safety risk to people.
