People who sit on the boards and committees of West Nipissing council will get a stipend to cover their travel and meals.
The amount will be $75 per meeting.
For people who sit on the planning board and Committee of Adjustments, they will also get 75 dollars a meeting even though it’s the same people and the meetings are back-to-back.
Some on council felt this was double dipping for members of these two boards.
Councillor Chris Fisher said they deserve the additional money because many times there’s a lot of legwork to do prior to the meetings.
Councillor Jeremy Seguin agreed with Fisher that there was a lot of preparatory work for these members.
Seguin also reminded his colleagues that the intent of introducing the stipend was to encourage people who live outside of Sturgeon Falls to volunteer for the boards and committees.
This way the volunteers travelling to Sturgeon Falls for meetings no longer take the hit on travel expenses.
Staff will now come back with a resolution on the stipend for council to pass.
