Last full day of municipal policing in West Nipissing

Wednesday marks the last full day of municipal policing in West Nipissing.

At noon Thursday, the service will cease to exist when it’s replaced by the OPP.

Anyone calling the 753-1234 number and expecting to reach the municipal police will get a recording redirecting them to the OPP.

There will be no official ceremony to mark the end of one police service and the start of another.

Eighteen of the West Nipissing police department personnel transitioned to the OPP as the detachment begins to work from a temporary location on John Street.

The permanent site will be built on Cache Bay Road on Highway 17 and should be ready for occupancy during the summer of 2020.

The change marks the end of 123 years of municipal policing in Sturgeon Falls and later with all of West Nipissing when the communities amalgamated 20 years ago.

The provincial force will be known as Nipissing West OPP.
