Near North board begins work on 2019-20 funding allocations

High school and elementary teachers facing layoffs in Nipissing District have to wait a while longer to learn if their notices will be rescinded and they’ll be back in the classroom in September.

Even though school boards in Ontario now have the technical information they need to determine where to allocate education funding, the process is a long one.

At the Near North District School Board level, the senior team is going through the Technical Papers and performing the necessary calculations.

Education Director Jackie Young says staff spent the weekend pouring over the information.

Because it will take time to plug in all the numbers including knowing what the expenses and revenues are for the board, Young says it can’t comment on the final staff numbers at this time.

In past years, school boards normally have all these calculations done by this time in the school year.

However, the Ministry of Education was seven weeks late in giving the school boards across the province the Technical Papers they need for the upcoming school year.

The ministry released those papers last Friday.

Within the Near North board, 62 elementary teachers got their pink slips and 114 high school teachers were given redundancy notices several weeks ago.

The hope among teachers and their federations is that the board can cancel the layoff notices in a few weeks.
