NBMCA trying to open Eau Claire Gorge this long weekend

The flood warnings being experienced by the North Bay-Mattawa  Conservation Authority the last few weeks have made it tough for it to know if it can open the Eau Claire Gorge this long weekend.

Sue Buckle, the Manager, Communications and Outreach of the NBMCA, says personnel are walking along the trail on Wednesday to see if there are any trees and branches along the trail.

She says smaller debris isn’t an issue but larger trees could be a problem.

“If there are large ones, they may have to go back (Thursday) and take a look and decide what they need to do to get it opened for the weekend,” Buckle said.

Buckle also says even if the Eau Claire Gorge does open this weekend she believes the trail will have detours.

“We suspect portions of it will be closed because portions go quite close to the river and we anticipate there is some flooding down at the lower level,” she said.

The Eau Claire Gorge is a series of dramatic rapids and waterfalls west of Mattawa off Highway 630 from the Trans-Canada Highway.
