Damage devastating at Jocko Point because of flooding

Damage to homes in Jocko point is described as devastating following Thursday’s rain.

That rain, combined with the wind and waves from Lake Nipissing flooded at least 150 homes and cottages in Jocko Point.

It remains windy today with gusts as high as 28 km/h and that may result in wave surges which may cause flood damage in nearby Beaucage.

Crews are working at sandbagging homes in Beaucage to prevent similar damage.

Nipissing First Nation is keeping an eye on both communities and sandbags continue to be available.

NFN says the water level at Lake Nipissing rose 2.5 inches yesterday.

It adds the Lower French River area is prepared to take on water from Lake Nipissing to ease the pressure on the communities surrounding the lake.

So far there is no state of emergency for Jocko, nor has there been an evacuation order.

NFN says it will issue an evacuation order if the water breaches Jocko Point Road and it becomes impassable.

Public works is mitigating that risk by building up Jocko Point Road by adding gravel to it.

NFN says there is no concern at this time of any road washout.

In the event that residents of Jocko Point are ordered to evacuate, notices will be delivered door-to-door and posted on all NFN communication channels.

In addition, the Jocko Point Community Centre will be available as shelter for residents, and there will also be access to potable water.
