West Nipissing residents face potential evacuation

Residents of West Nipissing may have to evacuate as the result of Lake Nipissing rising more than 20 centimetres by the end of the week.

Homes in low-lying areas are most at risk.

The rise in the water level is due to the large amount of rain the region is expecting on Thursday.

The municipality will provide homeowners with 100 sandbags to surround their homes.

Sandbags are available at the Fire Station on Holditch in Sturgeon Falls 24/7 and at the Lavigne Fire Station on Thursday from 9:00am to noon.

The municipality says the sandbags are designed for homes only and should not be used for secondary structures or shorelines.

Additionally, the municipality is making sand piles available people can fill bags with on their own.

Those locations are Marleau Road (at Lac Deux Milles Road Intersection), Marleau Road (at the East end/dead end), Avenue du lac in Lavigne, End of Eugene Rd (between Arbour and Comeau), O’Brien (Turn around) and Quesnel (West End).

The Emergency Services and Operation Team will continue to monitor water levels in the area.

Crews will also keep patrolling at-risk areas each day to see what changes are occurring and how to respond to the changes.

Flood-related questions or concerns should be directed at 753-1171.
