Serre talks about consumer incentives for zero-emissions vehicles

The federal government is giving people an incentive to buy zero-emission vehicles with a cash back program.

Nickel Belt MP Marc Serre says the program is outlined in this year’s federal budget.

The incentive applies to vehicles with six seats or less that cost less than $45,000 and vehicles with seven or more seats that are under $55,000.

The price in both cases is the base-model manufacturer’s suggested retail price.

In the event a six-seat or less vehicle is a higher priced model, it’s eligible for the incentive as long as the final manufacturer’s suggested retail price is $55,000 or less.

For vehicles that are battery or hydrogen fuel cell-powered or are a long-range plug-in hybrid, the incentive is $5,000.

It falls to $2,500 for short-range plug-in hybrids.

The incentive applies to vehicles that are either bought or leased.

The federal government incentive program contains $300 million and is in effect for three years.

To receive the incentive the consumer needs to have bought or leased the vehicle on or after May 1st of this year.
