Beginning May 1st residents of West Nipissing can no longer ask the local municipal police to carry out record checks.
The end of local checks is a consequence of municipal policing coming to an end next month.
Chief Ray St. Pierre says residents who need a police record check done will have to get officers from the OPP detachments in North Bay, Warren or Sudbury to do it.
St. Pierre is also officially telling residents that as of June 6th the local police station will be closed to make way for the OPP.
Noon that day is when the OPP officially assume command of the municipality.
St. Pierre says it means the municipal police office at 225 Holditch will be closed to the public and anyone needing information or paperwork done has to go to the OPP’s temporary headquarters at 216 John Street in Sturgeon Falls.
St. Pierre also says the switch from municipal policing to the OPP does not affect 911.
In the early part of May, the OPP will announce the Detachment Commander for West Nipissing and which of the West Nipissing uniformed police officers are making the transition to the OPP.
The OPP will also have a civilian component.
