Date set for OPP to take over municipal policing in West Nipissing

In about a week or two police officers with the West Nipissing Police Service will learn which of them will be making the transfer to the OPP.

The OPP is ready to take over municipal policing as of noon June 6th and is nearing the final stages of deciding who makes the cut and who doesn’t.

The provincial force is also approaching the final stages of selecting the civilian staff currently with the municipal police.

In addition, the OPP is expected to announce the Detachment Commander in early May.

Once the OPP assume operations at their temporary site on John Street, the present municipal police phone number will become defunct as of June 6th 12:00pm.

People calling the number will get a recorded message directing them to call the OPP.

The municipality will get the word out informing people about the change in phone numbers in an awareness campaign.

Meanwhile, some members of council including the Mayor are a bit worried that the OPP still haven’t said what services will be offered from the temporary location.

One suggestion was to have the OPP appear before council before the transition takes place and detail what police services the public can expect from the John Street location while the permanent site is being built.
