Tax levy rising nearly six percent in West Nipissing

The tax levy in West Nipissing is going up by an amount that exceeds inflation.

Council has approved a general levy increase of 5.74 percent.

The increase was approved by a 6-3 margin.

One of the councillors who opposed the large hike was Yvon Duhaime.

In a short speech to his colleagues Duhaime said he recognized that the municipal cost of doing business is expensive.

However, he believed that an increase in the 2.8 percent range would have been more than adequate to serve the municipality’s needs.

In total, the municipality’s budget for 2019 is $27.5 million.

Well more than half of that amount at $16.7 million is from taxation and a further $6.5 million is from grants.

The municipality is also transferring $885,000 from reserves.
