Mayor Joanne Savage says there are benefits to work together

West Nipissing Mayor Joanne Savage says there are benefits to communities in Nipissing District working together.

Savage says one of those areas is marketing.

Savage was one of about a dozen Mayors in Nipissing District hashing out ideas in North Bay over the barriers to growth the district faces.

Savage says there’s merit to letting people in Southern Ontario and other parts of the province know what Nipissing District has to offer.

“There are opportunities for growth in Northern Ontario as far as accessibility for land base,” she said.

“We want to be able to attract new development, new wealth and create jobs.”

On the issue of jobs, Savage says West Nipissing is no different than any other part of the District which is experiencing job shortages.

The Mayor says one area where the shortage is felt acutely in her municipality is with personal support workers.

“If there were 20 qualified PSWs who apply (for work) and have the requirements for the job, they’d be able to secure employment,” she said.

One of the biggest challenges to growth addressed at the Mayors’ meeting was the lack of access to high-speed internet in many municipalities including West Nipissing.
