The North Bay detachment of the OPP is issuing snowmobile safety tips. Police say you should have an emergency kit with you that includes tools, spark plugs and a spare drive belt in case your sled breaks down. Tell others where you’ll be and your expected return time so rescuers know where to look in case you’re stranded. Have fire-making supplies in case of a break down and bring along some snacks and water. Other tips include don’t ride on private trails otherwise you’re trespassing on private property. When on a trail and there are hikers or skiers, slow down. Ride according to the conditions and at a speed that gives you time to stop in case you need to react quickly to a changing environment. Ride sober and wear reflective clothing so it’s easier to see you.
