West Nipissing to apply for road infrastructure program

West Nipissing council intends to apply for joint federal-provincial funding to carry out major work on either Front Street or John Street in Sturgeon Falls.

The municipality wants to carry out the work under the Canada-Ontario Infrastructure program.

The program is a $30-billion initiative spread over 10 years and covers several sectors.

The first phase open for applications involves roads related projects.

Staff will prepare a report for council detailing the cost of the Front and John roadway projects so that council can decide which one to pursue.

Staff says the municipality can apply for up to $5-million.

The province will decide which projects get approval and staff told council not to expect any word on submissions before the fall.

The roads component does not address underground infrastructure like water and sewer lines.

It’s strictly surface projects.

Municipalities have to get their wish list into the province by about mid-May.
