Daffodil campaign for cancer research underway in North Bay and area

April is the start of the annual Daffodil campaign and North Bay and District residents are ready to hit locations and streets to raise money for cancer research.

Gil Pharand, the senior manager of the North Bay chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society, says about 1,000 local and area volunteers make up the local chapter.

He says many of them will be selling daffodil pins and going door-to-door during April.

The local chapter is also trying something new this year in the form of an online virtual daffodil.

“People go to mydaffodil.ca and for any size donation, they can honour someone or in memory of someone,” Pharand said.

“They’ll receive a badge via email that they can post on social media to show who they are honouring for the month.

Pharand says one in two Canadians will at some point be diagnosed with cancer.

He says the society is carrying out research in 100 different forms of cancer.

“Regardless of where that research is happening, it has an impact on us locally,” he said.

“There could be clinical trials going on in B.C. that will help someone here in North Bay for very specific types of cancer.”

During April Pharand says volunteers will be selling pins at around 10 locations
