Police warning snowmobilers about open water on frozen lakes

Police have started telling snowmobilers to check ice conditions following a fatal snowmobile incident south of North Bay.

A 42-year-old man died after he hit open water on a frozen lake southeast of Burk’s Falls.

The accident happened around noontime Sunday and emergency personnel located and pulled the body from the icy water.

Police say sledders have to start checking ice conditions to ensure the ice is thick and strong enough to support the snowmobile’s weight and to get a sense of where the frozen lake may have opened up as we move further into the spring thaw.
