West Nipissing supports federal immigrant labour program

North Bay and Sudbury are getting letters of support from the Municipality of West Nipissing as those communities look to participate in a federal immigration program.

Mayor Joanne Savage says West Nipissing wants to be part of the program but doesn’t qualify because of its small size.

Savage says West Nipissing would have to partner with either North Bay or Sudbury.

She says a decision on where the municipality will end up is expected this spring.

Sudbury’s reach under the immigration program is very large and includes other areas like Killarney, Markstay-Warren, Espanola and Manitoulin Island.

The federal program is an effort to attract immigrants to fill local labour needs and a drive to entice newcomers to locate to more rural parts of Canada instead of ending up in large centres like Toronto.
