The Labour Market Group has compiled a list of the top five job sectors across Nipissing District and in West Nipissing, retail trade tops the list with 19.5 percent of the workforce.

Health care and social assistance is right behind with 19 percent of the workforce.

West Nipissing employed 3,900 people in 2016 and the one-two rankings for both sectors mirror the provincial average for top job sectors.

At the provincial level, 12.1 percent of the jobs were thanks to retail trade while 11.6 percent were attributed to health care and social assistance.

The next big employer in West Nipissing was public administration with 11.3 percent of the workforce which works out to more than 430 jobs.

Fourth was educational services which accounted for 9.7 percent of the workforce.

That put it slightly ahead of accommodation and food services which provided jobs for 9.5 percent of the working class.

Not surprisingly North Bay had the most jobs at 26,290 and health care and social assistance was the top sector with an 18.1 percent total.

And where retail trade was first in West Nipissing, the sector was second in North Bay providing work for 15.6 percent of employed people.

LMG also found that in terms of percentages across Nipissing District, health care and social assistance in Mattawa had the highest employed workforce with 32.5 percent of the people in this line of work.

The smallest percentage of employed people in the top five sectors group was 1.8 percent in accommodation and food services in East Ferris, reinforcing the rural nature of the municipality.
