Film industry in the north gets more support

The film industry in the north is getting a financial shot in the arm.

Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli has announced $1.34 million for the industry.

A good chunk of that money will help create and sustain jobs in North Bay because of film projects.

Fedeli says $1 million is earmarked for Hideaway Pictures which created 977 fulltime equivalent jobs in North Bay last year.

Hideaway is a major shooting company in the Gateway City.

Since 2013, it’s shot 15 projects in North Bay.

The remainder of the money announced from Fedeli, $340,000, is headed to Northern Ontario Film Studios.

This company is using the money to buy more mobile film equipment as the sector continues to grow in the north.

This growth is no understatement.

Last year in North Bay alone film projects generated $9 million in economic activity.

That figure is now up to $23 million.

David Anselmo of Northern Ontario Film Studios says it’s important to develop the film industry and keep it sustainable through investments.

Anselmo says before Northern Ontario became the place to go for film projects, he had to work in other countries.

But with the province continuing to invest in the industry, the support has allowed him and others to move back home where they can pursue their film goals.
