Council may bring back recycling to rural areas

Recycling may be making a comeback to rural parts of West Nipissing.

Council is considering the return on a trial basis.

Rural recycling was axed by council about 10 years because people began using the depot centre as a landfill.

Councillor Yvon Duhaime says some residents abused the program with people dropping off waste at the site instead of taking it to the landfill.

Duhaime suggested perhaps a form of policing may get people to think twice before leaving waste behind at a recycling depot.

Another suggestion that came up was to perhaps equip the depot with one bin for garbage and another for recycling.

Although the details are still being fleshed out, council agreed to have recycling available extends the life of the landfill because then people are not throwing out recyclables.
