IPM to feature big tent in Verner

West Nipissing is working toward creating a big tent for September’s International Plowing Match and Rural Expo.

The tent would showcase what the municipality has to offer in terms of tourism, arts and culture, business and vacant land for prospective investors.

In addition, the municipality will ask neighbouring communities like North Bay, Sudbury and Timiskaming Shores about partnering with it so they can also display what their communities have to offer.

If the surrounding communities jump on board then the tent would become a regional display.

The massive tents are common in communities that host the IPM, and the local IPM committee members saw one in Chatham which hosted the 2018 plowing match.

Mayor Joanne Savage says the tent gives tourists and participants and visitors a full appreciation of what West Nipissing has to offer.

Staff will apply for FedNor funding and perhaps also ask the provincial government for money in an effort to get up to 90 percent of the big tent paid for by senior government.

The remainder would be covered by the municipality and its partners.

After the IPM, council was told parts of the tent can be reused.
