‘HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS EXPECTED’ AS WATCH UPGRADED TO WINTER STORM WARNING

Environment Canada is now issuing a winter storm warning, in effect for West Nipissing, North Bay, Powassan, Mattawa and French River.

Winter storm warnings are issued when multiple types of severe winter weather are expected to occur together.

The national meteorological service is reporting hazardous winter conditions are expected, with snowfall amounts of 20 to 30 centimetres and blowing snow Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday.

Snow at times heavy will begin Tuesday near noon or early afternoon. There is a temporary lull in snowfall in the evening. Snow will intensify again Tuesday overnight and persist into Wednesday.

The heaviest snow will fall from eastern portions of Manitoulin Island northeast to just south of North Bay. Total snowfall amounts of 20 to 30 cm are expected before the snow tapers off Wednesday afternoon.

Strong easterly winds gusting up to 70 km/h will cause reduced visibility in blowing snow.

This snow is associated with a Colorado low that will cross Southern Ontario Tuesday and Wednesday.

Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.
