North Bay police launching crime-prevention program

The North Bay Police Service is close to launching a new crime-prevention program, designed to make it tougher for criminals to break into homes and businesses.

It’s called Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, or CPTED for short.

Special Constable John Schultz says CPTED is a home or business inspection program where a police officer examines how secure your windows and door locks are and whether you have enough exterior lighting.

“You can make your home secure for not that much money,” Schultz says.

Schultz says the officer would also talk to the owner about possibly installing a security alarm.

“We don’t endorse any companies,” he said.

“We just give you an idea on what you can put into your home or business to make it more secure.”

Schultz cautions CPTED doesn’t make a home or business invulnerable to crime.

He says this is something no police agency can guarantee.

“But it is going to make it a little safer and maybe the bad guy will pass and leave your place alone,” Schultz said.

“That’s the whole idea behind CPTED.”

Although no date for the actual launch has been set, Schultz says it will be very soon.
