EXTREME CONDITIONS TODAY

Environment Canada has issued an Extreme Cold Warning, in effect for West Nipissing, North Bay, Powassan, Mattawa and French River.

The national meteorological service reports a multi-day episode of very cold wind chills is expected.

Extreme wind chills of minus 40 to minus 45 are expected across much of Northern Ontario this morning and low temperatures are in the forecast this weekend after dark. In North Bay and area Sunday overnight into Monday, a temperature of minus 31 C is expected with a wind chill of minus 39.

This arctic air mass will remain entrenched over the region through the weekend and into early next week, bringing a prolonged period of extremely cold wind chills.

Extreme cold puts everyone at risk.

Dress warmly. Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant.

If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.

Also, expect significant snowfall later today into Tuesday morning.

Snow, at times heavy, will develop later this afternoon or early evening and persist into Tuesday morning. Total snowfall amounts of 10 to 15 cm are possible
