Association puts out ice fishing tips

The Ontario Conservation Officers Association has several tips anglers on Lake Nipissing and other Ontario lakes need to keep in mind when ice fishing.

The association says above all, people venturing onto the ice need to make sure it’s safe to travel over.

The accepted rule for ensuring you don’t fall through the ice is to make sure it’s at least four inches thick if you are walking on the ice or ice fishing.

Snowmobilers need to add one inch to that thickness while people in a small car or pickup truck need an ice base of eight to 12 inches.

The association says the ice needs to be 12 to 15 inches thick for people in medium-sized trucks.

The Conversation Officers say they regularly see people ill-prepared for conditions on the ice.

Another of their recommendations is to wear a floatation or survival suit in case you break through the ice.

Also, ensure you have an ice pick which you can drive into the ice from the water to help you climb out in case you break through the ice.

The officers add having a whistle or cell phone with you is also a good idea in case you need to call for help.

The association says you should always let someone know where you plan to ice fish when you’re expected back and fish with a friend.

It strongly urges people to stay off the ice when it becomes unstable.

Anglers need to be mindful that ice in an area of fast-flowing water can be potentially unsafe at any time.

The officers say have a plan of action in case of an emergency which can greatly increase your chance of survival.
